Blazing Chrome, developed by JoyMasher, is a no-holds-barred run-and-gun game inspired by classics like Contra and Metal Slug. With crisp pixel art, brutal action, and a soundtrack that sends adrenaline levels soaring, the game feels like a forgotten arcade hit from the ’90s. But can it stand toe-to-toe with the genre kings, or is it merely a nostalgic homage?
Story

The story takes place in a bleak future where machines have taken control of the world, and humanity is on the brink of extinction. The few remaining resistance fighters wage a desperate war against the overwhelming AI rule. Players take control of Mavra, a battle-hardened soldier, or Doyle, a rogue robot who has turned against his mechanical masters. Their mission: infiltrate and destroy a central AI facility to save humanity from total annihilation. The story unfolds through short, pixelated cutscenes that perfectly match the nostalgic 16-bit aesthetic. While simple and heavily inspired by classic action films like Terminator, it provides enough motivation to blast through the enemy hordes.
Gameplay

At the core of Blazing Chrome lies its fast-paced and precise gameplay, instantly evoking memories of Contra or Metal Slug. Players navigate their characters through linear levels, constantly facing waves of enemies, deadly traps, and massive bosses. The characters move smoothly and responsively, which is essential for a run-and-gun game. In addition to the classic running and jumping mechanics, there’s a dodge roll, allowing players to skillfully evade enemy attacks—an ability that becomes crucial for survival in the later levels. The arsenal in Blazing Chrome is both impressive and diverse. Alongside the default weapon, there are three additional primary weapons, each with unique advantages. Players can also collect temporary support drones that enhance attack power, speed, or defense. These power-ups make a real difference and can be the deciding factor between victory and defeat.
Graphics and Sound

Blazing Chrome is a love letter to the golden era of 16-bit games. The animations are fluid, and both characters and enemies feature a unique, slightly gritty retro style that perfectly complements the game’s dark, dystopian future setting. One of the most impressive highlights is the massive bosses, often filling the entire screen with detailed sprites and devastating attack patterns. The environments are diverse and atmospheric, ranging from war-torn cities and dystopian factories to scorching deserts and high-speed train sequences. Explosions and particle effects are spectacular, adding that extra punch to every action-packed moment.
Blending driving synthwave beats with classic arcade sounds, the soundtrack perfectly complements the game’s intense action. Sound effects hit with power and clarity — weapons deliver satisfying impacts, explosions rumble with force, and enemies crumble amid metallic clanks or distorted screams. Especially during boss fights, each attack and impact becomes an auditory spectacle, heightening the tension and making these encounters truly memorable.
Difficulty
Blazing Chrome is relentless but fair. Much like Contra, a few hits are all it takes to bite the virtual dust. The enemy waves are well-balanced, though newcomers might find the entry barrier brutal. For genre veterans, the challenge is a thrilling test of skill, while casual players may need time to adjust to the classic trial-and-error mechanics.
Multiplayer
The game truly shines in co-op mode! Blasting through the levels with a friend makes the action even more chaotic and fun. Despite the intense firefights, the well-designed levels ensure that players rarely get in each other’s way, keeping the experience fair and engaging. For those who miss classic couch co-op games, Blazing Chrome delivers a fantastic modern substitute.
