After Burner II is an arcade rail shooter released by Sega in 1987.
Rather than being a true sequel, it is more of an updated version of the original game and was released in 1987, the same year as the original. The game received numerous conversions for various Sega and non-Sega home consoles, many of which struggled to match the speed of the arcade version.
General Information
The player controls a fighter jet whose in-game design resembles an F-14 Tomcat. The game features 23 stages: stages 5, 13, and 23 are non-playable landing intermissions, while levels 8 and 17 consist of canyon bombing runs. The remaining stages are air-to-air combat missions in which the player has access to an unlimited machine gun and a limited supply of missiles. The missile stock is replenished approximately every two to three levels during non-playable mid-air refueling sequences, as well as during the first two landing intermissions.
Trivia
During the first landing sequences, vehicles from Hang-On and Out Run make cameo appearances, driving across the runway as the F-14 takes off.
