Sonic Spinball was developed by Sega Technical Institute and Polygames, and was first released in Europe on November 15, 1993, for the Sega Mega Drive.
The game was released for multiple systems with different visual presentations, but largely identical content.
General Information
The game is set in Dr. Eggman’s Veg-O-Fortress, which is designed like a giant pinball machine. The player controls Sonic, who effectively becomes the pinball himself. As Sonic moves through the fortress, the player can use flippers to launch him upward and/or across the respective levels.
The game consists of four zones, and the objective is to collect Chaos Emeralds hidden throughout them. Collecting these is mandatory, as only then can the boss of each level be fought and the game can progress. After the first three zones, a Bonus Stage also becomes available, allowing the player to earn additional points.
Trivia
The Game Gear and Master System versions of Sonic Spinball aim to be as faithful as possible to the original, albeit with reduced graphics and sound quality and an adapted Bonus Stage. In Japan, neither the Game Gear nor the Master System versions were ever released; the United States also skipped the Master System version.
